Gilles, designers spend a day on the assembly line

Ralph Gilles, Vice President—Product Design, took eight members of his team on a field trip yesterday to find out first-hand what it’s like to build the 2009 Dodge Ram pickup truck.

Rotating among several different jobs on the Warren (Mich.) Truck Assembly Plant assembly line, the designers got their hands dirty doing everything from installing doors and headliners to working in the body and paint shops.

The idea was to learn how a vehicle’s design can affect quality and ease of manufacturing.

As expected, the experience was an eye-opener, but, Gilles said, valuable enough to repeat at other plants.
