32nd Annual Great American Smokeout

Posted on Tuesday, November 18th, 2008 at 4:45 PM EST.

Smoking is a difficult habit to break. If you are not yet ready to quit, consider where you are smoking and if it is affecting others.

Each year, the Great American Smokeout challenges people to stop using tobacco and raises awareness of the many effective ways to quit for good. Join thousands of other smokers looking to kick the habit on Thursday, Nov. 20, and make the Great American Smokeout your quit day.

To help you prepare for your quit day, follow these steps:

Tell friends and family of your quit day.

Get rid of all cigarettes and ashtrays at home, work, and in your car.

Stock up on oral substitutes—gum, carrot sticks, cinnamon sticks and hard candy.

Practice saying, “No, thank you. I don’t smoke.”

Think back to your past attempts to quit and remember what did or did not work for you.

Keep active—try walking or other hobbies and activities.

Drink lots of water.

Avoid situations where the urge to smoke is strong.

Good reasons to quit

The dangers of using tobacco are fairly well known, but have you ever considered the benefits of being tobacco free for life? Quitting will help you:

• Reduce your risk of heart disease

• Manage chronic health conditions

• Protect your family

• Improve your oral health

• Be less likely to have colds

• Increase your energy level and feel less stressed.

• Improve the quality of your sleep.

• Decrease wrinkling and premature aging of the skin.
